Particular significance of digital voltmeters and multimeters for realization of ambient-friendly, pro-ecological measurement systems are stressed in the paper. Methods of analog to digital conversion used in modern measurement systems are described in the paper. Particular attention was given to three main methods of conversion in amplitude domain: parallel flash converters, successive approximation converters and oversampling sigma-delta converters. The advantages and disadvantages of each method of conversion and area of their application for multimeters are described. Application of modern A/D conversion techniques together with digital calibration and automatic data correction procedures leads for significant increase of accuracy of the new multimeters, reduction of their power dissipation, amount of the electronic components and raw materials needed for manufacturing of those instrument. Thereby new multimeters are more ambient friendly that older one.
